Reactivation of the central nervous system - Level 1

By introducing external stimulation the dysfunctional nervous system has been proven to be able to reorganize itself. Without stimulation, research has proven that the central nervous system deteriorates leading to loss of bone density and muscle mass, thus reducing circulation and increasing the risk of infections and pressure sores, collectively these factors reduce the chance of any kind of regained movement.

At PATH SCI a lot of time is spent stimulating the nervous system through movement and load bearing exercises. It is very common for the individual to have an increase in central nervous system activity, bone density and muscle mass. Improvement has also been noted in sensation as well as an overall reduction in the likelihood of many health problems associated with spinal cord injuries.

For level one our goal is to have the therapist to help manipulate the nervous system by actively facilitating normal movement patterns. When stimulating both the sensory input and exciting motor responses, the client’s body will potentially begin to re-awaken the dormant nervous system pathways and develop new ones.
