Strength: muscle contractions - Level 2

When the nervous system starts to reactivate we are now able to move onto the strengthening phase of the rehabilitation program using eccentric and concentric muscle contractions. During this stage, the body will not stop relearning new movement, therefore level one practices continued throughout the rehabilitation process. It is our theory that the central nervous system is starting to now reconnect; the effect is commonly seen in the form of spasm and tone. The therapist is now able to ‘work’ with the new movement by facilitating and re teaching the dysfunctional movement into a more functional movement. The therapist can now stabilize the joints and apply resistance creating stronger contractions. When a muscle contracts hundreds/thousands of time with the right stimulation and controlled movement, the muscles and nerves will potentially gain strength and coordination.

Our goal for level 2 is for the therapist to assist with the development of the ‘new ‘movement being created, and by promoting the client to start to control this movement through repetition, strength and stabilization of the joints. With the right stimulation nerves and muscles will be able to gain strength, decrease in dysfunctional spasms and tone, as well as a reduction in pain and medications. There potentially will be more function and muscle control, with better circulation and sensation and more independence and quality of life.
